Project description:

As a result of the earthquake and tsunami of December 26, 2004, much destruction occurred to Aceh Province in Indonesia. The KfW Development Bank carried out an initial emergency programme to support the Dr. Zainoel Abidin Provincial Hospital (the main referral Hospital in Banda Aceh) and continued there efforts in follow up phases. In the framework of the "Hospital Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Programme" in Indonesia, ETLog Health EnviroTech & Logistics GmbH took over the healthcare waste management tasks.

Next to the direct operational support to the hospital, it was the major objective to develop and implement a comprehensive healthcare waste management system, including the set up of the needed infrastructure (waste function area, storage places) and the purchasing of needed equipment (incinerator and logistic equipment). Of special importance was the commissioning of the equipment and the training on the job of the future operators.

Services provided by ETLog Health EnviroTech & Logistics:

  • Evaluation of the current status of the health care waste management in the Zainoel Abidin Hospital and three other health care facilities of Banda Aceh;
  • Identification of the generated waste streams, segregation, transport and storage practices; Equipment and safety assessment;
  • Assessment of the actual situation of disposal and treatment (recycling) facilities in Banda Aceh;
  • Set up a short-, mid- and long term concept for implementing a sustainable waste management for the complete waste stream including reorganization aspects for the treatment of dangerous waste streams;
  • Set up and support of a waste team;
  • Comprehensive Training on healthcare waste management;
  • Set up and implementation of chemical and pharmaceutical waste management;
  • Development of a central treatment concept for infectious waste in Banda Aceh;
  • Purchasing and tendering of healthcare waste treatment and waste logistic equipment;
  • Professional consultancy and review in the phases of development (storage and waste treatment conception):

    • Schematic Design
    • Design Development
    • Draft Tender
    • Final Tender
  • Coordination of the activities with other donor programs;
