Project description:

Tashkent City and the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan carried out a project, financed by local and international funds (from EBRD and IBRD) to implement improvements to the City's solid waste management. This component for improvement of the City's disposal systems was being specifically assisted with co-financing from Japan and involved the design and operating requirements for disposal by sanitary landfill. Both general mixed municipal waste and biomedical wastes were being addressed for their disposal needs. Two existing dumpsites will have closure plans developed. The project was divided in several Tasks; Task 4 included the biomedical waste:

  1. Characterization of the current practices respecting biomedical waste generation and its management including identification of sources, types and volume of wastes;
  2. Design of temporary storage and collection system including technical specification of containers and vehicles required and input of this information into procurement documents;
  3. Select and design of secure landfill cell for biomedical waste disposal within the Achangaranskoe Highway disposal site.

  • Development of a short term solution for the safe handling and disposal of medical waste;
  • Feasibility study for the permanent solution for the management and treatment of hospital waste;
  • Development and delivery of necessary training to support the efficient operation of the system;
  • Recommendation of a longer-term development plan;
  • Development and delivery of a capacity building program on healthcare waste.
