National policy and action plan on healthcare waste management for waste from immunization campaigns

Project description:

The Ministry of Health of Russia expressed interest in getting technical support on setting up pilot projects on different logistic and treatment approaches for healthcare waste management. Different treatment technologies were planned to be tested: Incineration, Autoclaving and Chemical Treatment. Central and de-central collection including external transport of hazardous waste were part of the pilot areas. The adoption of legal regulations was another objective. The project included:

  1. A brief desk review of existing documentation on health-care waste management for the specified country
  2. Development of pilot project approaches with different treatment processes for infectious waste.
  3. Development of logistical solutions for the collection of infectious and sharp waste.
  4. Development of assessment schemes for the evaluation of pilot projects
  5. Support on the adoption and development of legal regulations on transport of medical waste on public streets.

Services provided by ETLog Health EnviroTech & Logistics:

  • Undertaking a review and analysis of the existing documentation;
  • Visiting urban and rural health facilities and medical waste treatment facility;
  • Bringing experiences of countries which already prepared national policy and plan of action on healthcare waste management;
  • Discussing outcomes of the meetings with national counterparts; debriefing of WHO Country Officer;
  • Revising national policies and action plans for healthcare waste.
